I want to be a music producer, and way into the future, start my own record company.

I don’t really care where the school is, or whether it’s public or private.

Please be aware that full sail is ONLY nationally accredited which is not even the minimum regional accreditation that is required for the school to possibly be reputable. You may already know, but the music industry is supposed to be very competitive and even those with a college (four-year) degree form an accredited program in music may have difficulty finding work. It’s best to avoid those private For-profit schools as most are merely out to "make a profit" (and their course credits usually do NOT transfer to other schools). The local community college or public/state university is usually a better choice(s).

With four record labels controlling 80% of the music in the U.S. you are almost guaranteed to get no recognition if you are not signed by one of these four companies.

You can hear bands such as nickelback and greenday that gave up all of their original goals as a band and conformed to write ‘fake’ music just to make more money.

And i just find it sickening how Nickelback can just write a song using a catchy chorus and lyrics about the summer just so they can release it during the summer time and make millions!

I mean anyone with half a brain knows Nickelback did not write ‘this afternoon’ from their heart or from past experiences, they wrote it because they new everyone would relate to it and buy it. This is true with most mainstream songs.

But now im hoping i can have your help! See every time i bring this up to people, they always just say "So?" They argue that is how the music industry should be run. They claim that bands should write music that people want to hear. And that all bands should try and make as much money as possible. They also claim if a band isn’t ‘good’ enough to get played on the radio then they obviously aren’t that good.

All of those arguments make me wanna puke!!! That just feels so wrong! Music is very important to me! I just feel like the most famous bands are the ones with the least talent of all.

So i need some sort of response to all of the arguments, besides ‘it is just wrong’

I agree with you 110%. Some bands that are just starting out might not have any chance at becoming famous with the more local/smaller record labels. The major ones might not think about signing a particular band because it’s not a popular or "in" genre. Also, with the major labels controlling the industry, the smaller ones have no chance and the competition involved in the industry is dead. And when there’s no competition, everything stays the same and nothing gets better. People would get sick of the same old bands and eventually just give up on the music industry altogether.

Another problem is that when certain labels basically hold a monopoly on the music industry, the bands become more mainstream and change their goals and focus (like you were saying about Nickelback).

Another thing you might not have though about, the way it affects how people discover music. Because of the copyright laws being enforced because of these labels, it’s very hard for people to discover music. For example, YouTube. Vevo rarely includes more "underground" music, only the major labels’ music. When you look for music online nowadays, you mostly find the music supported by major record labels, because it is more advertised. This puts smaller labels out of business, and in turn, discourages new bands from even making an effort.

And how long would that type of visa last for most importantly?

If the musician has a recording contract with a record company, and they want that musician specifically to record in studio(s) in the US for some reason, the record company gets the visa for their contracted artist. Probably a P visa. There are recording studios all over the world, plus recording artists do various on-location work for their albums & videos, so the company might not particularly want that artist to record in specific US studio(s) or location(s). They might not want to go to the hassle and expense, or they might want a German artist to do some location work in Germany for the "flavor" or whatever. It’s up to the company. If they want you in their studios, they schedule studio time, and get the visa to cover the schedule.

Now after release, when the artist goes on tour, the tour management or recording company get the musician’s visa for the duration of the scheduled tour.

The musician really doesn’t have to mess with any of it. They leave it up to their agent, manager and record company to put it all together.

Also, all the affordable schools for me only have the general major of music .
I want to major in Music production & Engineering or Music Production & recording but I’d have to go to Berklee or some very expensive school for that.

Is majoring the general field of music a bad idea? Would it still allow me to get a career in Music/Recording Engineer?

If music production is your field, there are public colleges which do it- not just private ones.

I would say that your showreel would be the most important thing- rather than a paper degree. Hands on experience with bands and theatre will all pep your resume.

Do general music only if you’d still be happy with the course itself. Aside from law, medicine and teaching, there’s usually several ways to get into a field of work so just follow your passions in the best way you can.

2) The music school near my hometown offers a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) in Music – Music Producer emphasis.
