I’ve seen a couple questions similar to this, but I have not found any straight answers. My father has a TON of vinyl records (33s), and he’d like to get them into his computer so he can put them on a MP3 player (not an iPod; he has another brand). I’m wondering if this is possible or not so he doesn’t have to buy all of that music again, and if it is, I’d like to know an easy and affordable way to do so. Any help would be really appreciated!
P.S. Sorry if this is the wrong category for this type of question!

You have to hook up the line-out on a record player to the line-in on a computer. Then you could play the record on the record player and record the audio on the computer. Keep in mind that records are higher fidelity than MP3s but also can have pops and hiss.

BQs
How do you listen to most of your music? (on ipod, computer, record, tape, stereo, radio)
Do you buy your music in stores or on iTunes?
Have you ever downloaded music illegally?
Do you think it’s wrong to download the music illegally?
Do you listen to online radio stations? What are the best ones in the UK?
Lark that’s so cool! Can I listen to your stations? How do I do that?

If my house got on fire and I could only grab ten things one of them would be my autographed album of Fleetwood Mac’s "Rumours" that my uncle got back in the 1970s and gave to me for my birthday a few years ago because he is the absolute best uncle in existence. I love every song on the album so much I’d hug each of them if possible, and the sound quality on vinyl is so superior to the iTunes version. I’m actually listening to them on my computer now and missing the vinyl version. (I’m at another house) I had a spazout blissfest on Tuesday when "Glee" did an episode based on the album. I have my mom’s old record player in my room, and I listen to that album as well as others by Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie, Queen, the Beatles, Nick Drake, Johnny Cash, Etta James, Maxine Sullivan, and Aerosmith’s earliest work.

BQs
How do you listen to most of your music? (on ipod, computer, record, tape, stereo, radio)
~ I mainly listen to music on my iPhone or laptop. We have a sweet music system set up at my dad’s house where you can plug your iphone in and have the music piped through the house, and I also just listen it while chilling in my room. I listen to music on my laptop while I’m working or online. I do still listen to the vinyl albums at least once a week, though. "Rumours" is my musical security blanket.

Do you buy your music in stores or on iTunes?
~ I buy most music from iTunes. I subscribe to Paste Magazine, and they have a sampler you can download every week. I’ve discovered a lot of my favorite new musicians there.

Have you ever downloaded music illegally?
~ Yes, when I was fourteen I downloaded music I couldn’t find on iTunes from Frostwire. I haven’t illegally downloaded anything since.

Do you think it’s wrong to download the music illegally?
~ Yes, it’s an act of theft. It harms the musicians you want to support, the musical industry as a whole, and the overall economy.

Do you listen to online radio stations? What are the best ones in the UK?
~ Yes!!!! I love internet radio. I used to listen to Pandora Radio all the time, but now I primarily listen to Last FM and my college’s radio station. I have the BBC iPlayer app and sometimes listen to BBC4, and occasionally I’ll listen to London-based stations like XFM and Capital Radio through iTunes.

Check out this station:

http://kzsu.stanford.edu/

They play my music sometimes!!!

You’re welcome to check out my LastFM and Pandora stations if you wish:

http://www.last.fm/user/SkylarkMelody

http://www.pandora.com/people/soaringskylark

If you go the Radio tab on the left sidebar of your iTunes library you can choose from hundreds of stations around the world.

~ skylark : )

Edit:
Yes, I’d be happy for you to listen to my stations! Just click on the live stream tab to listen to Stanford Radio. The way Pandora Radio works is stations "grow" around a song or artist you select to be the seed, so on the left hand side of my profile page you’ll see a long list of my stations. Each one has music similar to the artist or song I used as the seed when creating it. You can listen to each station individually, or scroll down to the very bottom and select "QuickMix" for a blend of all my music.

LastFm works somewhat similarly, but is even more personalized. I downloaded the software (it’s free and easy to get, if you’re interested) and it "scrobbles" my iTunes library. My station is built around the music in my library and songs similar to it. I have like 3000 songs of different genres, so it’s more diverse. Fair warning – I’ve been listening to a lot of Pat Boone songs lately trying to decide on one to sing as a birthday present for my step-grandmother, so now there’s music from the 50s cropping up, haha. You can listen to "SkylarkMelody Radio" by clicking on the tab about midway down on my profile page. It takes a while to buffer, but once it starts playing it’s smooth.

I do remember that. I have great memories of doing the same and shops here closed down as well. I remember flipping through the vinyl and making purchases based on album cover alone. It was a lot of fun and I oftentimes stumbled across great bands on the fly. I use itunes and it has it’s benefits but boy we are truly losing something special. =(

I have a stack of old vinyl records that I am haven’t played in over 20 years. Recently I inspected them, they have alot of smudge and dirt marks.
Any ideas for cleaning them without damaging the records. I don’t think CD shops sell vinyl cleaning fluid.
Thanks.

This home brew cleaner will work as good as many commercial record cleaners on the market. It does not take strong solvents to clean vinyl … commonly available cleaners (heavily diluted) will work extremely well.

Make two solutions … combine the following cleaners with distilled water in two separate bottles. Make sure to use distilled water and not tap water … to avoid depositing contaminants on the vinyl.

1. Mix 1 Part Resolve Spray and Wash to 20 Part Distilled water.
2. Mix 1 Part Enzymatic cleaner (BioKleen General Purpose Cleaner) or other safe gentle liquid enzymatic cleaners … free of dyes and fragrance … to 32 Part distilled water.

Apply 1st cleaner to vinyl record. Use a paint brush to spread cleaner uniformly over the record … let SOAK for 2 minutes. Rinse off with distilled water and soft cotton towel or high quality microfiber auto detail cloth.

Apply 2nd cleaner. Use a paint brush to spread cleaner uniformly over the record …. let SOAK for 2 minutes. Rinse off with distilled water and soft cotton towel or high quality microfiber auto detail cloth.

Let the record dry on a dish rack … several hours or overnight before playing.

I still try to buy vinyl whenever it’s possible, I prefer it to CDs. Do you still have any vinyl records, if so do you think vinyl is better than CDs?

Since I got married about 26 yrs ago I haven’t bought a single vinyl record. I think the last one I bought might have been Walking on the Moon By the Police. Since then I just bought tapes off Albums and CDs after they became more popular.
I think the vinyls are still in my parents’ attic so they must be worth something if I take them to a antique shop otherwise I would just take them to a charity shop for a good cause. Whenever I think of vinyl records it reminds of the music I bought from the Bay City Rollers to The Police. I used to treasure them too especially if I liked the artist. I also bought songs by Abba, New Wave music like Boom Town rats disco music from the Stylistics, Songs of the glam era etc. I also used to like the smell of the record player it was quite good for a second as well. It was also quite big and you could close it when you didn’t play with it. We also bought a few albums my mum bought me the Oliver! musical Album for my birthday once in the 70s.
