Recording Music and putting it on major MP3 downloading sites?

I have a friend that does really funny spoof raps. Is there a way to record him cheaply, so it is good enough to get on major downloading sites. Also, how would you get the song onto iTunes, Rhapsody, other downloading sites, etc. About how much would it cost for a average quality recording. Thanks for your help.
