If I own music on records can I download it for free?

I have a large collection of records, tapes, and 8-tracks and I would like to have most of that collection digital. So is it legal to download the music on those albums for free from a peer to peer program such as limewire? Thanks for your help.

I was always told that if you buy a CD that you are allowed to make a backup of it as long as you don’t distribute it.

So, in theory, if you ever got caught you could argue with the RIAA that you paid for the song already and was making a digital back-up. (Of course if you went to court you might have to show proof that you paid for it, like a receipt.

If you’re talking morally, I’d say you’re in the clear.
